National Poetry Month Week 2

April 15, 2020 By Karin Wiberg

Day 8

Two chickens walking on top of a A-frame coop
Chickens strut their stuff
around the yard, atop the cage—
all the world’s a stage!

Isabella and Ermengarde atop the coop. The illustrated poem can be found in Chicken Haiku.

Day 9

Three chickens digging in green shady, damp area
After morning rain,
grazing resumes–life
as a spring chicken

Day 10

pastel sketch of chicken's fluffy butt feathers being tousled by the wind
Dust devil whisks
pullet’s petticoats up—
old biddy tsks.

This is a cute little sketch for “Fluffy-butt Friday” by Dawn Rozzo, the illustrator for Chicken Haiku.

Day 11

chicken look right into the camera close up
First act of the day:
Eleanor croons for neighbors—
Hey, is this thing on?

Day 12

three chickens digging by the privets and azaleas
Shaded hens
digging for grubs—
Easter morning

Day 13

two chickens digging in the flower garden
Two hens stroll the garden path,
unconcerned about Chickenmama’s wrath.

Day 14

three chickens in their coop pecking away at a cabbage that swings from a chain--animated gif

Peck peck peck
at cabbage on a chain—
chicken tetherball

Yes, the chickens really like cabbage. We hang it from a huge eye screw on a chain, and away they go!

National Poetry Month Week 1

April 15, 2020 By Karin Wiberg

April is National Poetry Month in the U.S. and here at Chicken Haiku, we’re posting a poem a day on Instagram and Facebook. In case you miss them there, we’re sharing them again here.

Day 1

Flock of different breeds of chickens grazing in flowers and weeds
Yellow lion, black crow,
longtail turkey, speckled snow—
flock of backyard hens

Day 2

Large hawk sitting on tree branch
Three-chicken alarm
underneath the holly bush—
hawk surveys the farm.

This photo and poem are from several years ago with Flock 1.0. The ladies sure were scared!

Day 3

The fluffy butt of a chicken being tousled by the wind
Wind blusters,
chickens in their bloomers—
feathers dusters!

The blustery day in this photo inspired this poem. The illustrated version can be found in Chicken Haiku.

Day 4

Three chickens pecking away at their feeder
Chickens awake from sleeping sunset to sunrise—
breakfast of champions

Day 5

Two eggs on wood shavings in the nestbox
Two brown eggs
in the nest box.
Ah, breakfast!

Day 6

Three chickens dustbathing with fuschia and purple azaleas around them
Spa day treat—
dustbathing amidst
azaleas.

The photo is of Anne & Margaret (black) and Victoria (buff), aka Flock 1.0.

Day 7

Four chickens digging by the compost bin
Chickens dig,
earthworms zig…too slow!
It’s time to eat.

The illustrated poem can be found in Chicken Haiku.

Praise

“This is a beautiful book. The haikus zing with wisdom and wit. The illustrations are exquisite.”

“The illustrations — deft and fanciful — manage to capture the essence of the chicken haiku, which are charming, funny, and gorgeous.”

“Takes me back to visiting my grandmother during summer vacation. Will share it with friends and enemies, adults and children, artists and chicken lovers.”

“This book is for poetry lovers, chicken folks, for parents and their children. Absolutely love it.”

“The images are vibrant and each chicken shows such personality. The poems are fun, witty, and create images all their own. And then there’s the image-poem pairing that provides the reader so much more to sink into and enjoy.”
