Scuppernong Books & the Calendars Debut!

October 18, 2019 By Karin Wiberg

We had a great time at Scuppernong Books in Greensboro October 4. It was a beautiful Friday evening, perfect to be out and about. The store was hopping with all kinds of interesting activities (including participatory budgeting, which lets city residents age 14 and up vote on which projects to fund with $100k—pretty cool approach). Scuppernong is a lovely space with loads of new books (of course) and a nice used book section. We had a great time talking with customers and even the City’s budgeting folks!

We debuted our new Chicken Haiku 2020 Calendar at Scuppernong. One of our funnest conversations of the evening was with a young man in about 7th grade. He saw the calendars and his eyes lit up. “I have to get one for my dad—he has chickens!” He told us all about his dad’s chickens and school and the books he likes to read (sci-fi and fantasy—good boy). It was just a pleasure to see that excitement about reading and chickens. The calendars were indeed the big hit of the evening. And they are now available on Etsy.

Thanks to Scuppernong for hosting us. If you are in Greensboro, be sure to stop in to Scuppernong, where you can purchase the hardback version of Chicken Haiku.

Camaraderie with NaNoWriMo authors and readers

September 22, 2019 By Karin Wiberg

I had a great time yesterday afternoon at the East Regional Library in Durham at the NaNoRDU Author Showcase. I shared two poems and two pieces of original art from Chicken Haiku and got to talk to loads of interesting writers and readers.

Now those of you who know what NaNoWriMo is might be thinking, “But haiku is not a novel!” NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. It takes place in November each year, and challenges participants to write 50k words in 30 days–basically a draft of a book. It’s a worldwide event with 300,000+ people participating.

Lest you think I was an interloper, I have indeed participated in NaNoWriMo more than once–but let’s just say I have saved the world from having to read the resulting novels. But I might have just been inspired to participate again in this year’s event. 🙂

Fun on the Tour D’Coop!

June 21, 2019 By Karin Wiberg

June 1 was great fun at Coop de Kaferberg. We enjoyed talking to visitors about chickens, coops, tomatoes, wild tomatoes, compost, black soldier flies–all the good stuff you find on an urban “farm”–and of course Chicken Haiku! The Tour D’Coop is an annual fundraiser for Urban Ministries, a nonprofit serving and advocating for those affected by poverty. Thanks to everyone who turned out for the event!

Praise

“This is a beautiful book. The haikus zing with wisdom and wit. The illustrations are exquisite.”

“The illustrations — deft and fanciful — manage to capture the essence of the chicken haiku, which are charming, funny, and gorgeous.”

“Takes me back to visiting my grandmother during summer vacation. Will share it with friends and enemies, adults and children, artists and chicken lovers.”

“This book is for poetry lovers, chicken folks, for parents and their children. Absolutely love it.”

“The images are vibrant and each chicken shows such personality. The poems are fun, witty, and create images all their own. And then there’s the image-poem pairing that provides the reader so much more to sink into and enjoy.”
